Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned the family, and so she was taken care of by her mother, grandparents and godparents. When she was a little girl, Catherine Ford struggled with obsessive-compulsive disorder. She also experienced anxiety because of the word"association. Ford was attracted to acting in her teens, and joined the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time, Ford decided that this was not the best place for her. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama, finally winning a place on her fourth application. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford's television debut was in an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the time she graduated, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in programs on television including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. In addition to her regular performances in the theatre, Tate also joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate began to gain attention because of her stand-up comedic performances in the year 1996.
